Operate the LNPM-12C only in well-ventilated areas to prevent nitrogen asphyxiation. Maintain liquid nitrogen supply at 4–5 L/h under 0–10°C operating conditions and ensure all cryogenic safety protocols are followed.
- Ventilation Requirement: Ensure adequate ventilation in the operating area to prevent oxygen displacement by nitrogen gas.
- Cryogenic Safety: Always wear appropriate cryogenic gloves and face shield when handling liquid nitrogen or cold components.
- Temperature Range: The grinding chamber maintains -40°C to 20°C; do not exceed this range to avoid thermal stress on components.
- Jar Compatibility: Use only grinding jars and media rated for cryogenic temperatures and compatible with the mill's clamping system.
- LN2 Supply: Maintain a continuous liquid nitrogen supply at 4–5 L/h to sustain the desired low temperature.
Prepare the mill by securing the grinding jars and connecting the liquid nitrogen supply. Set the desired temperature and rotation speed, then initiate the grinding cycle while monitoring cryogen levels.
Required Equipment: Liquid nitrogen supply (100 L tank included), Cryogenic gloves, Face shield, Grinding jars and media
- Inspect the mill
Inspect the mill and ensure the chamber is clean and dry before use. - Load jars with sample and media
Fill the grinding jars with the sample material and media to 40% of jar capacity. - Secure jars on platform
Secure the jars onto the four-station platform and lock the clamps. - Connect LN2 supply
Connect the liquid nitrogen supply to the insulated chamber and set the temperature controller to the desired setpoint. - Set rotation speed
Set the rotation speed between 70 and 580 rpm using the control panel. - Start grinding cycle
Initiate the grinding cycle and monitor the liquid nitrogen consumption rate. - Warm up before opening
After completion, allow the chamber to warm to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.
What is the liquid nitrogen consumption rate of the LNPM-12C under typical cryogenic grinding conditions?
Under 0–10°C operating conditions, liquid nitrogen consumption is approximately 4–5 L/h. The system includes a 100 L empty LN2 tank for supply.
Does the LNPM-12C support vacuum or inert atmosphere grinding for air-sensitive materials?
Yes, the four-station vacuum inert atmosphere grinding configuration supports vacuum grinding jars, enabling inert gas or vacuum atmosphere cryogenic grinding for air-sensitive materials that require complete environmental isolation during processing.
What infrastructure and safety measures are needed for operating the LNPM-12C with liquid nitrogen?
Adequate ventilation is required in the operating area due to nitrogen gas displacement. Always follow cryogenic safety protocols when handling liquid nitrogen. The system includes a 100 L empty LN2 tank; liquid nitrogen consumption is approximately 4–5 L/h under 0–10°C conditions.
The ATOMFAIR LNPM-12C is a 4-station cryogenic planetary ball mill with 12 L total volume and -40°C to 20°C temperature control via liquid nitrogen injection, designed for ultrafine grinding of temperature-sensitive and air-sensitive materials at pilot scale.
Positive
- Cryogenic grinding down to -40°C: Continuous liquid nitrogen injection into the insulated chamber rapidly absorbs heat from grinding, maintaining a stable low-temperature environment as low as -40°C for processing temperature-sensitive materials such as electronic ceramics, polymers, and pharmaceuticals.
- 4-station simultaneous independent grinding: Four standard grinding positions allow simultaneous preparation of up to four different samples in a single run, dramatically increasing throughput for comparative material studies and pilot-scale production.
Trade-offs
- Continuous liquid nitrogen supply required: Under 0–10°C operating conditions, liquid nitrogen consumption is approximately 4–5 L/h, requiring a constant supply of LN2 and imposing ongoing operational costs and infrastructure for cryogenic fluid handling.
- Ventilation needed for nitrogen displacement: Adequate ventilation in the operating area is mandatory due to nitrogen gas displacement of oxygen, necessitating lab safety infrastructure and protocols to prevent asphyxiation hazards.
