ATOMFAIR LiBOB is a moisture-sensitive electrolyte salt that must be stored in an inert atmosphere to prevent degradation. Exposure to ambient air leads to rapid moisture absorption and hydrolysis, compromising purity and battery performance.
- Moisture Protection: Keep sealed under dry inert gas (argon or nitrogen) with moisture content below 10 ppm.
- Temperature Control: Store at room temperature (20-25°C) in a cool, dry location away from heat sources.
- Containment: Use airtight containers with PTFE-lined caps to prevent contamination and moisture ingress.
- Personal Safety: Avoid inhalation and skin contact; use in a fume hood or glovebox with appropriate PPE.
- Chemical Compatibility: Incompatible with strong oxidizers and protic solvents; handle only in anhydrous conditions.
This procedure describes the safe handling and dissolution of ATOMFAIR LiBOB powder for battery electrolyte preparation. All steps must be performed under strictly anhydrous conditions to preserve chemical integrity.
Required Equipment: Argon-filled glovebox, Precision analytical balance, Magnetic stirrer, 0.2 µm PTFE syringe filter
- Weigh LiBOB
Transfer the required amount of LiBOB powder into a pre-dried glass vial inside the argon-filled glovebox. - Add solvent
Add the appropriate volume of anhydrous organic solvent (e.g., EC/DMC) to the vial to achieve the target concentration. - Dissolve powder
Stir the mixture at room temperature using a magnetic stirrer until the powder is completely dissolved. - Filter solution
Pass the resulting electrolyte solution through a 0.2 µm PTFE syringe filter to remove any insoluble residues. - Store electrolyte
Transfer the filtered electrolyte to a sealed container and store under inert atmosphere until use.
How does LiBOB's low moisture and trace metal content improve SEI stability compared to alternative lithium salts?
LiBOB's typical moisture content of 57.34 ppm (spec ≤150 ppm) and trace metals such as sodium at 1.53 ppm and iron at 0.73 ppm minimize HF generation and structural capacity decay. This directly supports the formation of a highly stable, thermally robust SEI on graphite and lithium metal anodes, preventing gassing and capacity fade even under high-voltage operations.
Can LiBOB be used as a primary electrolyte salt or is it only an additive in lithium-ion cells?
LiBOB is engineered as both a premier high-purity electrolyte salt (≥99.9%) and a crucial battery electrolyte additive. It stabilizes the SEI on anodes and protects cathodes under high-voltage configurations, preventing oxidative decomposition of organic solvents. Its low free acid (46.35 ppm) and insoluble matter (223 ppm) ensure compatibility with standard organic solvent systems and cell chemistries.
What handling and storage conditions are required to maintain LiBOB's ultra-low moisture specification?
As a moisture-sensitive salt with a certified moisture specification of ≤150 ppm (typical 57.34 ppm), LiBOB must be handled and stored under strict inert atmosphere conditions. Exposure to ambient air will rapidly degrade its purity and compromise SEI-forming performance. Argon-filled gloveboxes or dry rooms with controlled humidity are necessary during formulation and storage.
ATOMFAIR LiBOB offers ultra-high purity (99.96%) with exceptional SEI passivation and high-voltage resistance, but requires strict inert atmosphere handling and is limited to laboratory R&D applications.
Positive
- Superb SEI Layer Passivation: Promotes formation of a highly stable and thermally robust Solid Electrolyte Interphase on graphite and lithium metal anodes, enhancing cycle life and safety.
- High-Voltage Resistance: Prevents oxidative decomposition of organic solvents at the cathode surface under high-voltage operation, enabling stable performance in advanced lithium-ion configurations.
Trade-offs
- Requires Inert Atmosphere Handling: LiBOB is exceptionally hygroscopic; must be stored and handled in a dry inert atmosphere (argon or nitrogen) inside a glove box or vacuum-sealed with desiccant to prevent moisture uptake.
- R&D Use Only Restriction: This material is explicitly intended for laboratory research and development purposes only, not for medicinal, household, pharmaceutical, or consumer product applications.
