2. Key Physical and Chemical Properties
Solubility: Insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid, ethanol, ether, sulfuric acid, nitric acid and molten metals; soluble in cold concentrated alkali solution and decomposes to produce hydrogen, can be oxidized to boric acid by concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid.
Chemical Activity: Stable at room temperature/in air; oxidizes when heated to 300℃, burns at 700℃ (flame is red, trace vaporized boron flame is green); reacts with oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, halogens, carbon at high temperatures, can also directly combine with most metals to form metal borides, or react with organic compounds to form boron-carbon bond compounds.
Physical Properties:
- Density: 2.35g/cm³
- Hardness: 9.3 (Mohs Hardness)
- Specific Gravity: 2.33–2.45
- Melting Point: 2300℃
- Boiling Point: 2550℃
Elemental Characteristics: Located at the metal-nonmetal dividing line in the periodic table, dominated by nonmetallic properties, high electronegativity, small atomic radius, properties similar to silicon.
3. Scientific Research Application Scenarios
- Material Doping: Used for doping modification of semiconductors and ceramic materials to regulate the electrical/mechanical properties of materials;
- Chemical Synthesis: As the core raw material for synthesizing borides and organoboron compounds, suitable for catalytic reactions and organic synthesis experiments;
- High-Temperature Experiments: Utilizing high melting point characteristics, as sample carriers or reaction components in high-temperature environments.
