NEPEM Proton exchange membrane for vanadium flow battery
The strength, moisture retention, and vanadium resistance of proton exchange membranes are enhanced by incorporating special materials into the tape casting process.
Description
The NEPEM Proton Exchange Membrane, engineered for vanadium flow battery systems, integrates specialized materials into a tape-casting fabrication process. This innovation enhances key performance metrics: mechanical strength to endure cyclic operational stresses, moisture retention for sustained ionic conductivity, and vanadium resistance to mitigate crossover-induced capacity decay. By addressing these critical challenges, the membrane ensures stable, long-lasting energy storage performance, making it a reliable choice for vanadium flow battery applications in grid-scale energy storage and renewable energy integration projects.

Measurement Notes:
- Measurements were taken with the membrane conditioned at 23 ยฐC and 50% relative humidity (RH).
- Conductivity measurements were performed at 23 ยฐC and 100% relative humidity (RH).
- A base titration procedure is used to determine the equivalents of sulfonic acid groups in the polymer resin, which is then applied to calculate the acid capacity or equivalent weight of the membrane.
- Dissolved hydrogen concentration was measured using a hydrogen-rich water test pen (ENH-1000 Portable Dissolved Hydrogen Meter), based on the principle of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the solution to calculate the dissolved hydrogen concentration.
- Water content of the membrane (dry weight basis) was determined with the membrane conditioned at 23 ยฐC and 50% relative humidity (RH).
- Water uptake (dry weight basis) was measured by conditioning the dry membrane in water at 100 ยฐC for 1 hour.
